Who we are:
We have been married for 12 years, with a shared passion for modern farmhouse living, sustainability and the art of creating a simpler life.
Joshua, the voice behind The Bauernhaus, is a dual citizen German-American who enjoys bringing traditional European techniques and old fashioned charm into modern day living here in the US.
With a background in Event Planning and Interior Design, you’ll also learn tips and tricks for effortless entertaining, the secret to a perfect martini, and how to introduce warm and welcoming personal style into your home.
What is The Bauernhaus?
Largely inspired by my German heritage and other influences from around the world, Bauernhaus (German for “farmhouse”), celebrates modern homesteading. It’s my way of sharing how you can introduce a more wholesome, hands-on way of living into your everyday life, no matter your location or busy schedule.
For many of you readers, most of your families came from a small town or country life, where their home was more than just a shelter. It was also an active, working household. Maybe you came from a family of blacksmiths, or cobblers, mechanics, or like us — farmers.
In much of the world, this way of life has faded away as modern technology and economy has evolved. But I believe there’s something we can learn from these folks, the people with fewer distractions, whose lives were hard work, but remained simple and non-complicated. Doesn’t that sound nice?
The modern homesteading movement bridges the gap of the old and the new and celebrates the notion of slowing down in order to create a healthier, happier lifestyle. It’s about the satisfaction of work worth doing, the gratification of producing your own food and home-cooked meals, the pleasure of making personal connections and the joy of being active in the moments you actually want to remember.
The beauty of hands-on living is that it doesn’t matter if you live in your parent’s basement, or a studio apartment, or a sprawling 500 acre estate. No farmhouse required. Find the things that bring you joy, and you can start today with as little or as many of the resources you have at your fingertips.
So let’s get started!
